Memorial Day Weekend on the Firehole

At last Memorial Day weekend has come and past, signaling the beginnings of what looks to be another fantastic fishing season. This time of year we tend to focus our attentions towards the spectacle of Mother Nature that is Yellowstone’s Firehole River. Named after the various hot springs and geysers that continuously feed into it, the Firehole as of late has been a veritable bug factory.  On a given day you’re likely to encounter Pale Morning

Duns, Blue Winged Olives, various Caddis flies and even the much anticipated arrival of the salmon flies coming very soon. In addition to these things however, it would be important for the savvy angler to be ready to swing soft hackles or yellow-green leech patterns through some of the deeper runs and ruffles.

Today our clients were even lucky enough to catch fish with a herd of buffalo rolling around in the dirt while eyeing our movements from across the river; and, that’s just the kind of experience that fishing in Yellowstone can deliver.

More than anything though, these past few trips have given us here in the Yellowstone region sheer excitement and curiosity at what is still to come. The Madison River in Yellowstone in the coming days will get low and clear enough for great fishing, the lower Yellowstone River will be a hot spot for awesome cutthroats and even the fabled Lamar Valley will start heating up soon before we know it. There will be hot

days, some rain and even some hail mixed-in; but, there will also be clear mountain air, seas of mountain pines, good friends and dozen-fish days. I, for one, I am looking forward to every moment.

For now though, we at the Yellowstone Fly Shop wish you tight lines and hope to see you on the river.
