Sept. 2018
As we fish our way through October, our season is coming to an end. Feels like we are just getting started, but yet we find ourselves running down to our favorite stream or lake to get every minute of fishing in before the snow starts falling and winter sets in. Get out and enjoy the fall fishing, its the best time of the year to catch the big ones. Here is our fishing report for this week.
Box Canyon:
The Box is still fishing good. Flows remain steady and good for the wading fishermen. The flies haven’t changed, You will want to have the usual #16 and #18 zebra midges in brown, black or red under a rubber legs or prince nymph. Streamers are also fun in the fall to get those monster eats. I would have an assortment of colors.
Madison River:
If your still looking to fish dry flies, we would suggest small Pseudos patterns such as a Parachute Adams or a BWO Cripple, However, nymphs are still producing the best #18 – 20 Zebra midges in red black and brown, BWO emergers, $3 Dips, Prince nymphs and Rubber legs. Streamers have been on and off for those of you dedicated put in your time and you will be successful. Try going smaller and thinner in olive, white or sparkle.
Yellowstone National Park:
The park continues to fish great this past week. We have been fishing the Madison and Firehole and have had good days on both. To catch the runners on the Madison, nymphing and streamers are working best but we also have seen a few fish rising to small baetis on the surface. On the Firehole, swinging soft hackles is good and the dry fly fishing has been excellent using Blue wings or White millers. The North East corner has been on and off again to go along with the weather. Call the shop for up to date reports. Flies to have handy for the park. Rubber legs in #6 -8, Princes #6-8, Ram Caddis nymphs, Zebra midges #16 – 18, Soft hackles in pheasant and hares ear, Para BWO in #18-20 and White Miller Caddis in #14.
